Morning: HISTORICAL TRAUMA
This workshop provides a space to discuss and acknowledge historical trauma and the long-term effects of European colonization on Native Americans/Indigenous People in North America. Dr. Vorpahl uses storytelling to share the context of Indigenous Historical Trauma. She shares the lived experience of colonization, forced assimilation and abuse through the eyes of a family over the generations. The listener experiences the collective trauma of residential schools, forced displacement, colonization, suppression of culture, language, and religion had on Indigenous people across North America. Dr. Vorpahl reframes Historical Trauma into Historical Resilience by acknowledging the pain related to collective historical trauma and healing power of maintaining a connection to Indigenous heritage, identity, and spiritualization.
This workshop brings the participants together by using didactic information and experiential learning; giving them an opportunity to learn and share with each other. We invite the participants to share from their perspective the impact they have seen, endured, experienced and how it relates to working with Indigenous communities.

Afternoon: CULTURAL HUMILITY
Opening Minds and Hearts to Work Effectively Across Differences
This interactive workshop aims to introduce participants to the concept of Cultural Humility as a framework for building the capacity to develop authentic, positive and constructive relationships with individuals and communities whose culture is different than one’s own. The Cultural Humility approach is particularly useful for helping leadership and service providers to build the trust, understanding and self-awareness that is necessary for working effectively over the long term with people from diverse cultures and communities. Participants often find that the Cultural Humility approach offers tools for growing in rewarding ways not only professionally but personally. This is because Cultural Humility is both an external and an internal journey, combining learning about diverse cultures with approaches that encourage self-reflection, connection and growth. Cultural Humility is about opening both minds and hearts.
